Another Eco Park coming up in Howrah’s Dumurjola Stadium

The total expenditure to bring up the park will stand at Rs 23 crore. This is the first time when such an initiative has been taken for the Howrah district.

Ashok Ghosh, chairman of HIT, said inspection has been conducted on Wednesday and work will take place on war footing to gift the beautiful park to the people of the state. It is expected that like the Eco Park in New Town, the new one in Howrah will also come up as a popular tourist spot in due course of time.

There is a 7.5 acre water body in the plot where the park will come up and it will be decorated as it had been done in the Eco Park at New Town.

Howrah, the twin city, had remained neglected during the 34 years regime of the Left Front. No steps were taken up to bring an overall development of the district. After the change of the guard in the state, the urban part of the district has received a new lease of life with Howrah Municipal Corporation’s steps to keep the city “clean and green”. Moreover, the traffic situation of the urban part of the district has improved a lot with formation of a separate police Commissionerate for the urban part of the district.

Projects to beautify the city by planting saplings on the road dividers as it is in Kolkata and setting up of roadside parks besides thoroughfares like Foreshore road were also taken. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had lauded the work of the Howrah Municipal Corporation and had directed it to work in proper co-ordination with the HIT.

With the setting up of the Eco Park in Howrah, the people of the district will get a place of amusement. As the place, where the park will come up, is not too far from Howrah Station, people from adjacent districts will also start pouring in to the place. Another advantage of the location is that it is situated close to Kona Expressway. People would also not take much time if they come by car or from Santragachi Railway Station.

Manoranjan Ghosh, a resident of Shibpur area in Howrah, said the time has come to change people’s concept of Howrah. People still think that the urban part of the district is still full of factories. But the scenario is quite different at present. Though there are factories in some parts, rest have developed a lot and setting up of the park will give a facelift to the district.
