Another CBI case against Abhishek Verma

A fresh case was registered against the infamous arms dealer Abhishek Verma, an accused in the Navy War Room Leak case, for allegedly taking huge amount of money to get a Swiss defence company out of government's blacklist. The case is being probed by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The deputy inspector general Satish Golcha is in-charge of the case.

As the CBI registered the case, the agency sleuths conducted raids at as many as 10 places in Delhi and Gurgaon on Thursday. A team from the I-T Directorate of criminal investigation also joined CBI sleuths in the raids.

The Swiss defence firm in question Rheinmetall Air Defence AG is a defence equipment supplier. Verma has been booked under sections 8 & 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI officials said that they had recommended blacklisting of this Switzerland-based company as it had allegedly adopted corrupt and illegal means to obtain the contract of supply of 35 mm revolver gun system by Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in 2011.

However, when the process of blacklisting was under process, Verma got in touch with its representatives and assured them stalling of the process on the pretext that he could influence the officers in the concerned government agencies.

It is further alleged that the company agreed and even paid USD 5,30,000 to Verma for this work. This money was paid by fund transfer to the bank account of a benami company of Verma in the USA from the bank account of the Swiss company.

The Income Tax Department, on the other hand, has begun a probe to detect alleged kickbacks. It has begun a preliminary investigation into some of the overseas accounts of Verma and his associates. The IT department is reportedly in possession of classified data on Swiss and other accounts belonging to Verma and others known to him. Sources claimed that the teams have collected some crucial information and documents.
