Anna, team won’t talk to ‘conspiring’ govt

With suspense growing and reports of uneasiness in Team Anna over the social activist Anna Hazare's secret meeting with the law minister Salman Khurshid on 23 June near Pune, Hazare accepted on Wednesday that he met Khurshid. Hazare defended meeting the minister secretely, saying that he thought that it would help the country in getting a Jan Lokpal authority.

Hazare held a press conference in Ralegan Sidhhi on Wednesday to clarify his stand. He also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in which he accused the government of conspiring to split his team by trying to create differences among its members. Hazare also released the letter, which says that he and his team would now not talk to anyone from the government on the Lokpal issue, keeping in view its conspiracies against him and Team Anna members.

Hazare, in the letter, has said that Khurshid had asked him to keep the meeting secret, to which he had agreed. He also alleged that Khurshid tried to persuade him not to attend the anti-corruption protests by Team Anna and the yoga guru Ramdev.

'Khurshid told me that the prime minister would discuss issues with me and my team. Once the prime minister accepts the demands, then it would be made public through a press conference. Till then, it should be kept secret,' Hazare said.

Clarifying about Narayanasamy's letter of Monday in which he had claimed that Hazare had helped the government in evolving a consensus, Hazare said that this communication addressed to him was delivered to his team members, unlike the usual practice of reaching him directly.

'I was asked to keep the meeting secret. I said why not to do it in the interest of people. But, Narayasamy gets his letter hand delivered to my team members. That is when doubt arises whether an attempt was being made to split the team.'

He said that the government had done a lot to create differences in the team, spending crores of rupees, but it did not succeed.
