Anna fathers a movement, quite literally

The supporters of India Against Corruption (IAC), who claimed loyalty to Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday afternoon, showed extreme fondness for Anna Hazare by the Monday evening after the Delhi Police detained them. When they were taken away by the Delhi Police under Rule 65 of the Delhi Police Act, they gave their father's name as Anna Hazare and address as Jantar Mantar.

As many as 947 of IAC supporters, led by Kejriwal, were detained twice by the Delhi Police on Sunday when they tried to stage a protest at the residences of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari at different places in the Lutyens' Delhi.

After the Delhi Police detained the IAC supporters for the second time during the day and took them to Parliament Street police station, they wrote Hazare's name in the field for father's name on the official papers.

'Most protestors have written their father's name as Anna Hazare and home address as Jantar Mantar,' said a senior police official, and 'it has  now become difficult for us to catch them.' The police have registered five cases of rioting against unknown persons in various police stations of New Delhi district.

'We were not in the situation to check the details at the time the entries were made. However, we will look into it,' said Mangesh Kashyap, additional DCP (New Delhi), when asked about the wrong entries made by the IAC supporters at the police station.

The police took them to Parliament Street police station to register their details after they were detained. The police station was full of people, with more than 500 supporters of IAC detained there. Fearing that the situation may worsen, the detainees were let off hurriedly.

However, the IAC spokesperson Aswathi Murlidharan countered the police theory. He said, 'Our supporters have not written any thing on papers in the police station. The police have not even counted them. Our supporters are not any different from those of Anna Hazare. Even Kejriwal calls himself a soldier of the Anna Hazare movement.'
