An evening of stars

With their sights on the revival of the ancient art of jewellery making and to give creative freedom to the craftsmen, Asha Kamal Modi started a new concept in the year 1988. The Art Karat initiative gives unemployed artisans a chance to get jobs. Out of 100000 unemployed artisans in India, she has been able to provide jobs opportunity and livelihood to more than 900 artisans so far which is providing bread and butter to their family.

The foundation reaches out to the rest of the country by saluting eminent personalities and achievers who have contributed to the nation in their respective fields by giving them the Art Karat Award for Excellence. Shubha Mudgal will be awarded at this event and she will also be performing.

The stunning list of people who will be graced with awards are - Birju Maharaj, the leading exponent of Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Kathak dance in India. He is a descendant of the legendary father and guru Acchan Maharaj and uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj.

Bhajan Sopori is hailed as the 'Saint of the Santoor' and the 'King of Strings'. His family has played Santoor for over six generations. Sopori, considered as the cultural link between Jammu and Kashmir and rest of India. He runs a music academy called SaMaPa, Pandit Bhajan Sopori has taught music at Washington University, US.
