AMRI Hospitals organises walkathon to mark World Heart Day

AMRI Hospitals, in an effort to promote healthy lifestyle organised a walkathon on Thursday to mark World Heart Day which is celebrated on September 29.

The walkathon was flagged off by Surajit Kar Purkayastha the Director General Police in West Bengal.

This year, the theme for “World Heart Day” feted by AMRI Hospitals focused on the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases among people.

The walkathon witnessed participation from celebrated personalities like Singer Usha Uthup, sports personalities like Sambaran Banerjee, Dibyendu Barua, renowned actress Suchandra Vaniya also participated at the walkathon among others. The initiative encouraged participation by students, NGOs and eminent personalities from all over Kolkata. 

Rupak Barua, Group CEO, AMRI Hospitals was present to address the media.The AMRI walkathon 
witnessed participation of over 600 people from Deshapriya Park to Vivekananda Park. Senior cardiovascular consultants from the Hospital spoke about health hazards posed by 
excessive consumption of junk food and too much “screen time” (i.e. time spent watching TV, working on the computer or with I-Pads) by children.

Parents were guided to encourage their children to participate in healthy practices, like taking part in outdoor activities and sports.

The walkathon was flagged off with a bunch of heart shaped balloons sent up in the air promoting the cause of leading a healthy lifestyle.

Commenting on the initiative, Rupak Barua said: “Rapid changes in lifestyle, work life stress and unhealthy dietary habits have contributed to heart diseases among the people, across the globe. Physical activity does not need to be complicated. Something as simple as a daily brisk walk can help you live healthier.”

“Keeping this in mind, we have initiated the walkathon in celebration of World Heart Day, to bring about a positive and long-term sustainable behavioural change,” Barua added

Since today’s lifestyle is stressful with the increase number of working professionals, the chances of a disabled health condition is on the rise. Hence AMRI Hospitals built this initiative to sensitise and create awareness regarding health conditions, most of which is triggered from heart diseases.
