Amit Shah could be named BJP chief in a day or two

With BJP president Rajnath Singh comfortably settled at the centre as home minister, back in the party headquarters speculations are rife that Amit Shah could be named as the party president in a day or two. Shah was the former state home minister in Gujarat and the man behind a clean sweep in Uttar Pradesh almost wiping out Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party in national elections. Informed sources said, ‘There are talks in between the senior party leaders to announce his name on Sunday or latest by Monday.’

Earlier, there were rumors that Jagat Prakash Nadda from Himachal will be given the responsibility but now it seems that Shah’s becoming the party president is confirmed. The reason is Modi wants Shah to remain in Delhi and become his eye and ear while running the government with no intervention in the PMO.

Many political leaders feel that he (Shah) was not included in the cabinet list, considering series of ‘allegations’ against him, which might have sent a wrong message to the people. There was a three corner fight for the party president post after Om Mathur from Rajasthan, Nadda and Shah emerged as a front-runners. Nadda was in the race because of his close association with all the party leaders, especially the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

On the other side, Shah is close to Modi and his effort in making BJP’s firm base in UP could not be ruled out. He was the party’s UP in-charge during the Lok Sabha poll. Mathur was known as a great coordinator and sharp in taking decisions. But now it is almost confirmed that Shah’s name will be announced at the earliest considering assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir this year.
