This year is the centenary of Tagore’s visit to Japan. He left Kolkata with artist Mukul Dey and CF Andrews in early May. He met the wife of Rasjbehari Basu in Japan. His speech criticising imperialism was not liked by the King of Japan.

Even after his death, Tagore’s appeal to all generations of people including foreigners has not gone down. His poems and songs still attract hundreds and thousands of youngsters all over the world. Tagore scholars like William Radice and Martin Kampchin believe that Tagore is equally relevant in contemporary world when people are becoming impatient and disharmony is on the rise. It may be recalled that the Jews in concentration camps had enacted Tagore’s Dak Ghar after translating it in German language.

Thursday’s programme will be a tribute to Tagore on the eve of his birthday on May 8. Tagore had used many Western tunes in his songs and also Indian classical ragas and folk music have enriched his music.
