‘Amendment of Wages Act will bring chaos’

The Centre’s decision to bring in an ordinance to amend the Payment of Wages Act for allowing business and industrial establishments to pay salaries through cheques or electronically will create chaos as majority of employees/workers have no account, said Labour Minister Gopal Rai on Wednesday.

Claiming that about 60 per cent of labourers have left the national Capital post demonetisation, Delhi Labour Minister Gopal Rai sought clearance of amended minimum wages Bill proposed by the AAP government from the Centre.

He said that 60 per cent of labourers have left the national Capital and moved to their native villages post demonetisation. He demanded from Centre to clear the Wages Bill proposed by his government so that “strict action” can be taken against the violators.

“There is currently no fear among employers that’s why they take ATM cards of labourers and give them salaries after deducting their commission. If Centre approves our minimum Wages Bill, there will be provision of strict action against those employers violating rules,” he said.
