Alka Sirohi is new UPSC Chairman

President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Alka Sirohi, a Member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as its Chairman. Sirohi’s appointment will be effective from September 21. “The appointment is till further orders or till completion of her term as Member on January 03, 2017, whichever is earlier,” an official release said.

The post of Chairman of UPSC will fall vacant on 20th of this month, consequent upon demitting of office by Deepak Gupta on attaining 65 years of age. Sirohi was sworn in as Member of UPSC in January 2012, after a long and successful career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

Reportedly, the government also decided to take a stern action against a UPSC member and former top aide of Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Chatter Singh on charges of corruption. Earlier this month Chatter Singh, who was raided by the CBI in the Manesar land scam case, was Principal Secretary to Hooda when he was the chief minister of Haryana.
