Akhilesh moots Third Front, says Congress, BJP failed on all fronts

Strongly mooting a Third Front, Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said the Congress and the BJP have failed despite all the opportunities given to them.

To a question on whether he will discuss a Third Front option with Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, Akhilesh, who is in Chennai on an invitation from the Pattali Makkal Katchi with regard to a youth festival to be organised at Mamallapuram near Chennai on 25 April, said, ‘I can say what I discussed with Jayalalithaa only after meeting her.’ The UP CM advanced his visit as he had a prior appointment in Lucknow on 25 April.

On relations with the Congress, Akhilesh said, ‘Relations with the Congress is good and bad...good from our side and bad from their side. They say bad things and we listen. We supported them because it was a secular front but what happens in future is my leader’s call.’ The Congress, he said, had done nothing to check inflation and unemployment too was a huge problem. Asked about the Narendra Modi-Rahul Gandhi face off, he said, ‘The rich and business people have used CII and FICCI to chose their leaders...but the poor and voiceless too need a leader.’

Reacting to the latest incident of rape of a five-year-old child, Akhilesh said, ‘Safety of women should be a priority. Governments should take strong action.’ His government, he said, has been very successful in implementing the party manifesto. ‘On the law and order front, we have been very strict. UP is a big state. But, we are not compromising on law and order... We even took strong action against erring police officers,’ he said.
