Akhilesh gets tough, directs IAS officials to improve image

Uttar Pradesh cief minister Akhilesh Yadav has asked IAS officials to improve image of their cadre as it has got a beating in the last few years resulting in dwindling central deputation for officers from the state.

Addressing officials during IAS week he said that government can only formulate policies but the onus to implement the same at the ground level depends on bureaucrats. ‘If they do not perform their duties the policies will remain only on the cupboards,’ he said.

The chief minister used harsh words  against officials after Samajwadi Party national president Mulayam Singh Yadav had asked chief minister to make bureaucrats accountable for their work. And chief  minister had assured Yadav Sr that he would issue fresh directives so that changes could be witnessed in one week’s time.

Yadav Sr had given these directives during party’s state working committee meeting. He was furious and had told CM that government had failed to live up to the expectations of the people.

Akhilesh Yadav used the opportunity to chastise the bureaucrats. Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said that his government initiated pro-poor schemes. ‘We inherited an empty coffer from previous BSP government. Despite that we are working hard and trying to achieve our targets. We will not be able to meet the targets if bureaucrats fail to perform,’ he stressed.

‘You are the backbone of the administration. If you do not do your duty as per the expectation of the political leaders and the masses the working will come to a standstill,’ he said.

On their part bureaucrats informed the CM about their problems. They talked about the small tenure they get to serve and explained as how they were transferred two or three times in a year.

The chief minister assured the officials that they would not be shifted if they continue to perform well.

Chief secretary Jawed Usmani and agriculture production commissioner Alok Ranjan apprised CM of other problems that they are facing.
