AIIMS rubbishes faculty’s claim

Refusing to accept the explanation given by the AIIMS management, health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has sought a detailed report on the allegations that an attempt was made to ‘tailor’ the post-mortem report of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of former union minister Shashi Tharoor.

On 26 June, Sudhir Gupta, Head of Department (Forensic medicine and toxicology), who was heading the medical probe in Sunanda’s death, filed a 124-page rejoinder (in a sealed envelope) to the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) alleging he was goaded by higher authorities to give a tailor-made report in connection to Sunanda Pushkar’s death. In his rejoinder, he accused Tharoor and Ghulam Nabi Azad, president of AIIMS and former health minister, of pressuring him to act in an ‘unprofessional’ manner to hush up the matter.

Millennium Post has accessed the emails exchanged between Tharoor and one Dr Rajiv Bhasin on 26 January, 2014 at 9.25 pm. The mail clearly indicates that Tharoor was planning to ask AIIMS director MC Mishra, through a mutual friend - Anil Chatta, to doctor the autopsy report. In the email, Tharoor has written what he wants in the autopsy report.

Dr. Gupta in his rejoinder said he has been asked to tailor-made the report on those particular lines that were mentioned in the email. The emails written by Tharoor were marked to his Personal Secretary, Abhinav Kumar, an IPS. To one of the mails, Kumar replied ‘Got it Sir’ that indicates the tailoring process was on.

The rejoinder filed before CAT, in possession with Millennium Post, also revealed that continuous pressure was being put upon him for repeated meetings on the said autopsy matter by MC Mishra. ‘Ethically, the director has no business to call the meeting for autopsy reports,’ a source said.
