Agitating students of Presidency University withdraw gherao

The agitating students of the Presidency University have withdrawn the gherao on Saturday
afternoon after the assurance of the release of merit lists.

The students, demanding the release of the merit list to the registrar of the university, had gheraoed the controller of the examination since Friday night. The agitating students, however, demanded the release of the merit list early, but the university authorities allegedly did not pay any heed to it.

Later, the registrar Debojyoti Konar had assured them to release the merit list latest by August 9.
The students, meanwhile, also alleged discrepancy in the admission process and demanded transparency in the process.

The protests started on Friday night after the meeting with the Registrar Debojyoti Konar, with the students demanding for the merit list of candidates for undergraduate and postgraduate courses to be released soon.

The students are alleging that the delay in releasing the merit list is affecting their careers as the rank given by Joint Entrance Board is anomalous. “The joint entrance board has been informed about the delay. They will take care of the student’s demand,” said Konar.

The students alleged that the university has deliberately delayed the release of the merit list and was not cooperative towards the students.

This year, the university has given the responsibility to the Joint Entrance board to take the examination for university’s graduation level in science.

The board has taken the examination but the result which they have published, allegedly have many irregularities. The university, however, assured to publish the merit list but have delayed in that process.

The agitating students, after having waited for long had gheraoed the registrar and the controller.
On Saturday afternoon, the students withdrew the gherao as the registrar assured them to release the actual merit list as soon as possible.
