After Modi, Rajnath now tries to woo Mamata

A day after Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi made overtures towards West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, in Kolkata, BJP president Rajnath Singh on Wednesday followed it up by criticising the Central government over the attack on Banerjee.  ‘If in the United Progressive Alliance(UPA) government, a chief minister and the West Bengal  finance minister can be attacked by hooligans then it clearly shows that how safe a common man is in the capital,’ said Singh.

Earlier in the day West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee flew back to Kolkata,’Delhi is not safe, I am sorry, I was badly manhandled but I cannot speak about it openly,’ said Banerjee. The West Bengal chief minister and her finance minister Amit Mitra were manhandled on Tuesday evening by student activists affiliated to the Left as she arrived at the office of the Planning Commission.

The statement by the BJP president was a clear attempt by the party to woo Trinamool Congress(TMC), as the comment was made despite the fact that the party had held a  press conference just an hour ago. BJP leaders said that though formal round of discussion have still not been initiated between the two parties over a possible alliance however, leaders from both the parties have been interacting informally.

In the past also Singh had come out in support of Banerjee when she was on an indefinite fast in 2006. Singh who was the BJP president at that time had gone and met Banerjee in Kolkata, who was protesting against the alleged forcible acquisition of land for setting up the proposed Tata car factory at Singur.
