After clean chit, DU principal reinstated

After the clean chit given by judicial commission set by the Delhi government, police, NCW and DU’s apex committee, the supporters of Pavitra Bhardwaj (36) who succumbed to her burn injuries, staged a demonstration opposing the decision.
In October, Bhardwaj doused herself with kerosene and set herself afire outside Delhi Secretariat. Later, she succumbed to her injuries and the principal whom she accused of sexually harassing her was suspended by DU.
In their reports, all the committees termed the case as that of political victimisation and conspiracy by vested interests. On 30 December, the judicial commission inquiry report gave a clean chit to the principal by acknowledging the report of Millennium Post, titled — Ex-DU employee, who set herself on fire, estranged from husband’s kin, published on 8 October.
The report revealed that the victim had marital problems with her husband and in-laws. In 2006 she allegedly framed false complaints against them too.
National Commission of Women on 24 October submitted a report claiming that allegations made by the deceased are not substantiated in her earlier letters as there is no specific mention of any incident of sexual harassment. Similarly, DU’s apex committee against sexual harassment concluded, ‘Pavitra Bhardwaj’s complaint of sexual, physical and mental harassment by the principal of BRAC could not be established.’
In 2011, she had filed a similar complaint against the principal at Jyoti Nagar police station but the inquiry revealed that ‘the allegations were leveled just to serve her vested interests just to avoid duty and browbeat the seniors’. ‘Truth is powerful and prevails,’ said a professor in the same college, requesting anonymity.
He added that the unprincipled and unwarranted suspension has been manipulated for the ulterior motives and political reasons. ‘The principal exposed their nepotism, corrupt practices and enforced discipline in the interest of students and the institution,’ he claimed to be the reason behind the recent politics.
