Actress succumbs to burn injuries after suicide attempt

An actress committed suicide by setting herself on fire in her in-law’s house at Tollygunge.

Police said the victim Puja Aich had immolated herself on July 11 night. She was admitted to SSKM Hospital with severe burn injuries. She succumbed to her injuries early Wednesday morning.

Police came to know after speaking to the victim’s father that she had been subject to torture in her in-law’s house. Her husband and mother-in-law used to torture her despite her father having met all their demands. Police came to know after preliminary investigation that he had set herself on fire on July 11 following a quarrel with her in-laws. She was immediately admitted to the hospital. The doctors had tried their level best to save her. But she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday morning. Her father lodged a complaint against her in-laws and husband.

The actress, who became well known for her performance in TV serials including Keya patar Nouko and Badhubaran, had got married a year ago and she was depressed for the past few months due to the trouble in her family. She was not even ready to leave her in-laws despite being repeatedly asked by her father.

Puja had also played role in movies including Bojhena Se Bojhena and Kalo Bhromor. This is not the first time when an actress from Tollywood committed suicide. A woman make-up artist had committed suicide a few days ago.

In another tragic incident, a class XI girl student of a school at Arambagh in Hooghly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of the common room in her school. The police are yet to ascertain the exact reason that drove the student of the arts stream of the school to commit suicide.

There was no one around when she had entered the common room. She hanged herself using a piece of clothes. Another student saw her hanging and shouted for help. Everyone came running and brought her down. She was declared brought dead when taken to the hospital.

Police sent the body for an autopsy. They spoke to the students and teachers of the school. The victim’s friends had not been able to give any clue to the police. Instead they told that they had not seen anything suspicious in her movement.

The police spoke to the family members of the victim. The incident led to a panic among the school goers.
