Acid hurled at parents, son over land dispute

Miscreants hurled acid on a couple and their son following a family quarrel at Balurghat in South Dinajpur on Monday night.  All the three victims who have sustained serious burn injuries had been admitted to Balurghat district hospital. 

Police have arrested two persons in this connection so far. Police said that there had been a family quarrel between Ranjit Roy and his paternal uncle Shyamal Roy over a piece of land adjacent to their house. 

The two were at loggers head over the possession of the piece of land. Even a case in this regard was filed in a court. The accused attacked them when the three members of the family were sleeping at night. 

Ranjit Roy and his wife Saraswati Roy and their son Surjya had been living at Mullickpur area of Balurghat for quite sometimes.  Recently they had engaged in a quarrel over the possession of a piece of a land. Both the groups claimed that they owned the particular land. The incident was a fall out of the quarrel, as per preliminary investigation. 

The victims’ relatives have lodged a complaint in the police station on the basis of which police have started an investigation. At around 12 am some miscreants who are not identified yet hurled acid from a window on the three who were asleep. They woke up with pain and were feeling a burning sensation. They shouted for help. 

The local people rushed to the spot after hearing the scream of the couple and their little child. They took the injured persons to the hospital. They have been undergoing treatment at the hospital. 

Ranjit said that they were attacked following the land dispute. Ranjit had received injury on his eyes and some parts of his body while his wife also suffered burn injuries on several parts of her body. Surjya, who was at the corner of the window, received less injury.

Police have started an investigation in this regard and conducting raids to arrest the culprits. Ranjit has told the police that his Shayamal might have been involved in the incident.
