Accident on Majherhat Bridge kills one, injures 16

A person was killed and 16 others were injured in an accident on the Majherhat Bridge in the wee hours of Sunday. A head-on collision between a private car and a mini-truck claimed the life of a man while others were admitted to the hospital. Police said that both the vehicles were speeding and came from opposite direction before ramming into each other. There were at least 20 people on the mini-truck, who were local fishermen travelling with drums of fish and were going to a local market at Diamond Harbour. The driver of the car succumbed to his injury at the hospital. The locals had rushed to the spot soon after the incident. They also agitated in front of the police team alleging that road mishaps occur frequently. “They were fishermen, who were going to a market at Diamond Harbour. The car was driven by a man, who was killed in the accident. Both the drivers were errant. We have started a case,” a police officer said. However, the two wrecked vehicles were seized. The driver of the mini-truck, who was critically injured and taken to the hospital, will be grilled.
