Accident and vandalism case: Owner of killer Mercedes held

Police said the 24-year-old youth Varun was arrested from near his residence on Garcha Road. He was the owner of the car and had been absconding for the past three days since the incident took place.

He was booked on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code). He would be produced before the Alipore Court on Thursday.

Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a raid in the house of one of his friends and it led to his arrest. He had been moving from house of one friend to another. He had also passed a day in the residence of one of his relatives in Rajpur-Sonarpur area but had returned to the city once again.

A senior police officer said that he was arrested after a marathon interrogation in Lalbazar.

Though sources in the city police’s detective department claimed that Varun was driving the car, the senior police officer said that it is still a matter of investigation and the investigating officers need to probe a bit more to fully ascertain whether he was in the driver’s seat. Initially police came to know that besides Varun, there were two women in the car.

Investigation revealed that Varun had gone to attend a party directly from his office on AJC Bose Road and the accident took place when he was returning home in the wee hours from the party.

He had fled the accident spot after his car hit the scooty killing one and injuring two on Hazra Road.

Sources said that Varun told the police that his car was in normal speed and the accident took place as the scooty suddenly took a right turn.

The police also took statement of the injured youth – Mithilesh Yadav and Rambarat Yadav. Sources said that both of them are still under treatment but they confirmed the presence of Varun in the car that night after seeing his photographs.
