ABVP, SFI clash over film screening in Jadavpur University

It may be recalled SFI supporters did not allow screening of the film Taurus directed by Sokurus in Kolkata International film festival alleging that the director had maligned Lenin over a decade ago.

The trouble began when ABVP supporters were making arrangements to screen the film featuring Anupam Kher in one of the ground of Jadavpur University. The SFI supporters went up to them and told them that they would not allow screening of the film as it had misrepresented Marxian ideology. This led to a verbal duel and finally led to a clash in which several students were injured.

The assistant registrar of the university dispersed the students and said no trouble should take place over the screening of the film.

The trouble began when the director of the film Vivek Agnihotri reached the spot. SFI students gheraoed his car and shouted slogans. They asked him to leave the place immediately.

Again a clash ensued between ABVP and SFI students. Later, when ABVP students were arranging to screen another film at Triguna Sen auditorium, SFI supporters went there and protested against the screening of the film.

Agnihotri said the film had dealt with contemporary social issues like morality, Maoist movement, fundamentalism etc. Besides Kher the other actors like Arunodoy Singh and Mahi Gill have acted in the film. The story is about a B-school student who got involved in politics.

Agnihotri said it was unfortunate that along with the students some teachers of the university got involved and stopped screening of the film.
