Absconding SBI cashier held in Asansol

Police have arrested Sumantha Sarkar the cashier of the State Bank of India (SBI) Baguiati Branch from Raniganj who went missing with Rs 25 lakh two days ago.

On the basis of the complaint lodged by the manager of the Branch, the police started an inquiry. The manager in his complaint mentioned that Sarkar had fled with nearly Rs 25 lakh from the cash box of the bank.  A team of Baguiati police after conducting an investigation arrested the accused from Raniganj area of Asansol on Thursday morning.

He was brought to the city later in the day. Police said that Sarkar used to work at the SBI Asansol Branch about four years ago and later transferred to Baguiati branch. He had developed a relationship with a woman when Sarkar was posted at Raniganj. In the investigation police came to know that the woman also went missing on Tuesday. Police also said that Sarkar had taken an early leave on Tuesday from the Branch manager by saying that his brother had met with a road accident. 

Hearing about this, the manager let him off.  The Branch manager told the police that Sarkar, while leaving the Branch had told him that he would return before closing of the bank in the afternoon and locked the cash box.  As the accused did not return till the afternoon the manager lodged a complaint in the police station. When police interrogated Sarkars family members in Madhymgram they claimed that they did not have any clue about the matter and did not know about Sarkar’s whereabouts. A police team from Baguiati broke open the cash box in front of the Bank employees and found that around Rs 25 lakh that were deposited till 12.30 pm was missing. After examining the CCTV footage police came to know that how Sarkar took away the money from the bank.
