Abhishek’s operation for orbital floor fracture goes off smoothly

The three-hour long surgery was conducted by eye and orbit surgeon Dr Anirban Bhaduri. A team of 13 doctors assisted him. The team had two cardiologists Dr Manotosh Panja and Dr SB Roy, two Maxillofacial surgeons Dr Amit Roy and Dr K. Kothari, two eye specialists Dr Abhijit Chatterjee and Dr J Sengupta and two anesthesiologists. Veteran physician Dr Sukumar Mukherjee was also a part of the team that was examining Banerjee.

The doctors said that the operation had been conducted successfully. The Trinamool Congress MP will be under observation for 72 hours in the Critical Care Unit. Except for his wife, no one will be allowed to see him. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her cabinet colleagues visited Belle Vue Clinic and enquired about his health and talked to the doctors.

Because of a crack on the orbital floor, the movement of his eyeball was badly affected. This could have given rise to a major problem in the future. The crack was repaired by installing a Titanium Mesh which was affixed with a 3mm screw. Dr Rajen Tandon, a well-known cosmetic surgeon, was present during the operation. Forced duction test was done to determine whether the eyeball moved away from the muscle. The stitches will be removed after 10 days.

Hundreds of Trinamool Congress supporters had gathered outside Belle Vue Clinic on UN Bramhachari Sarani from morning and were eagerly waiting for the news of their beloved leader’s health. Mamata Banerjee requested them not to cause inconvenience to the relatives of those receiving treatment at the clinic. Special puja and prayers were held in different parts of the city and the districts for Banerjee’s speedy recovery. Rallies were also taken out in the city with the rallyists holding banners wishing for his long life and speedy recovery.

Banerjee had a providential escape when the car he was travelling in met with an accident on Durgapur Expressway near Singur. He was heading for the city after attending a party workers’ meeting in Murshidabad when the accident took place.
