Abhishek discharged from hospital, advised complete rest for 2 weeks

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was on Monday afternoon released from Belle Vue Clinic, 13 days after his accident on the Durgapur Expressway.

Abhishek had a providential escape when his vehicle met with an accident on Durgapur Expressway near Singur on October 18. He was returning to the city after attending a party workers’ meeting at Murshidabad.

The medical board examining Abhishek at Belle Vue Clinic examined his health on Monday afternoon. The medical bulletin issued in the morning stated that his condition had substantially improved in the last two days, with  marked improvement  in all vital parameters. His superficial stitches of lacerated wound over the left cheek were removed on Sunday forenoon. The stitches in the eye-orbit areas would be removed in due course. His eye movements and vision are better.

Abhishek has been advised two weeks’ complete rest at his home. However, he will have to visit the clinic either on Thursday or Friday to remove the stitches in the eye-orbit areas.

After being admitted to the clinic, Abhishek took 72 hours to come out of the trauma. He was suffering from high temperature, body pain and fluctuating heart beat. The crack on the base of the eye-orbit was repaired by eye and orbit surgeon Dr Anirban Bhaduri. A titanium mesh was placed and affixed in the eye-orbit with a 3-mm screw.

A team of 19 doctors including cardiologists Dr Manotosh Panja and Dr SB Roy, eye specialists Dr Abhijit Chatterjee and Dr J Sengupta, maxillofacial surgeons Dr Amit Roy and Dr K Kothari were present during the operation. Veteran medical practitioner Dr Sukumar Mukherjee headed the medical team.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went to the clinic to see her nephew almost daily. On Saturday, she visited the clinic with Abhishek’s daughter.
Hundreds of Trinamool Congress workers – many carrying bouquets – had gathered outside the clinic on Monday morning. In the afternoon, Trinamool leaders Tapas Roy, Indranil Sen and Manas Bhunia visited him at the clinic.

At around 5.15 pm, Abhishek left the clinic in an SUV amid tight security, wearing a T-shirt and a pair of dark glasses. Party workers shouted slogans and many threw flower petals. Over the past 13 days, party workers organised special pujas and prayers wishing him a speedy recovery.
