Abhishek Banerjee: Forensic experts visit accident spot

The MRI procedure done on Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress MP, on Wednesday confirmed orbital floor fracture.

“He is under the observation of a 14-member medical board. Any decision on surgical intervention shall be made as soon as the acute facial swelling subsides, according to the Maxillofacial Surgeon,” stated a medical bulletin issued by Belle Vue Clinic on Wednesday evening.

Banerjee had a providential escape when the car he was travelling in overturned after hitting a milk van which was being towed away by a recovery vehicle on Durgapur Expressway near Singur on Tuesday afternoon. He was taken to the clinic where he was admitted to the ITU.

The medical bulletin further said that Banerjee developed fever and complained of acute body pain due to the trauma which he had undergone. Also, his oxygen saturation was low due to which he had to be on oxygen continuously.

Meanwhile, the Haripal police station has registered a case against an unknown person under section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder), 120 B of IPC(criminal conspiracy) and section 8B of the Indian Highways Act.

The cases have been initiated following a complained lodged by Sajal Mondol, one of the police personnel who was travelling in the pilot car of Banerjee. Banerjee was returning to the city after attending a party meeting in Murshidabad. Another Trinamool Congress leader who was in the car following Banerjee fell sideways.

A forensic team went to the spot on Wednesday and collected broken shards of glass from the windscreen of the vehicle in which Banerjee was travelling. The windscreen has been badly damaged.

They also collected samples of the paint which got stuck after his car hit the milk van. The CCTV footage of the Toll Plazas which were on Banerjee’s route have been taken for examination. The police officers talked to his driver. They also went to two stalls from where the driver had taken food on the highway.

The police will reconstruct the scene as suggested by the forensic experts. If required the police personnel in the pilot car and Banerjee’s driver will be interrogated.

Hundreds of Trinamool Congress supporters on Wednesday went to Belle Vue Clinic to inquire about the health of their beloved leader. They also conducted special puja and prayers for his speedy recovery.
