AAP promises city makeover in its Varanasi manifesto

The manifesto promised to get the city the status of ‘Holy City’ along with a special economic package from both centre and state. A cleaner river Ganga was also one of the key agenda’s on the manifesto.

AAP in its 8 page manifesto promised to not only undertake the cleaning of Ganga river, but also improve sewage treatment in the religious city. Other issues included addressing the poor road, electricity, water, health and education infrastructure. The party said they would also carry out a referendum for establishment of an AIIMS like facility in BHU and increase seats in all schools and colleges in city. To address problem of cleanliness, AAP said they would ask for replacing of plastic cup with ‘Kulhads’ for tea and other things.

AAP accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of ‘ruining the city’s infrastructure and civic amenities in the last 15-20 years of its rule’. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal is pitted against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in Varanasi. The third main candidate is Ajay Rai of the Congress.

JD(U) to support Arvind Kejriwal in Varanasi

Janata Dal (United) has decided to support Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Arvind Kejriwal in the elections from the high profile Varanasi seat in Uttar Pradesh where BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is in the fray.

JD(U) is opposed to both Congress and BJP, hence would support Arvind Kejriwal in Varanasi and a decision regarding it has been taken in the party, JD(U) spokesman Rajeev Ranjan Prasad told PTI on Thursday.

Prasad said JD(U) has been playing a prominent role in bringing together non-BJP, non-Congress parties on a single platform to fight corruption and strengthen secularism.

Another party spokesman Neeraj Kumar said the Varanasi JD(U) unit came out with a proposal to support the AAP leader to which the national leadership endorsed. JD(U) president Sharad Yadav and general secretary K C Tyagi would campaign in favour of Kejriwal at Varanasi, he said.
