A spellbinding rendition

It was marked in great style at Kamani Auditorium in Delhi, by an evening of elegant and energetic Kathak performances staged by Legends of India a non-profit society which has staged around 40 gala concerts by top notch performers in Classical music and dance featuring 70 artistes. These include stellar names such as Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Jasraj, Girija Deviji, Hariparsad Chaurasia, Shiv Kumar Sharma , Ustad Amjad Ali Khan to name just a few. Legends of India also has also been awarding legends for Life Time Achievements while encouraging upcoming names in music and dance by staging various events.
Dipak Maharaj is the bearer of the proud legacy of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak, and the son of the Legendary Birju Maharaj. Dipak started the evening with the signature composition of Birju Maharaj himselfArdhnarishwar which in itself demands a level of footwork and abhinay skills. He then moved on to performing numerous small pieces that enthralled the audience. He held the auditorium spellbound for close to an hour. He was accompanied by a talented quartet of Prashu Chaturlal on the Tabla, Anirban Bhattacharya with vocals and Ghulam Waris on the Sarangi and Pt.Jaikrishan Maharaj on the Pakhawaj.
This was followed by another spectacular performer Sandeep Mahavir. Mahavir comes from a family that boats of the 15 generation in performing arts, notably his father the legendary K Mahavir who is a composer having worked with the likes of Lata Mangeshkar and other notables. Sandeep, performed with uncommon verve and passion.
The quartet accompanying Sandeep wereAnindo Chatterjee from Kolkata on Tabla, the sangat between the two translated into an amazing display of footwork and Tabla playing. The evening ended with felicitation of the artistes.
