A lesson in resource conservation

With people, engrossed in celebrations and the roads weighed down by the hustle bustle of traffic due to the after-effects of rain and the ensuing festivities, it never occurred to anyone to come forward and think about nature and their environment apart from a group of cognizant youngsters.

Yes, you read it right! While humming the tune “Ise kehte hain Global Warming” (this is known as Global Warming), a mimicked version of the famous Honey Singh rap that echoed in front of the famous Yashoda dairy, Rajendra Place; the students of Prabhav Theatre Group, were all geared up to spread the message of conservation and protection of the environment and most importantly, Mother Earth.

Paryavaran Suraksha; a street play under the supervision of Amit Antil, the director of the play with the support of Seema Upadhyay, environmentalist and scientific officer, Delhi University, was a phenomenal effort and turned out to be an eye opener for the people watching. The play that started amidst the drizzling weather and a passive atmosphere, soon was encircled by the locals who found it quite fascinating due to the scintillating performances of the members of the group.

They also emphasised on the main culprit responsible for Global Warming; the Chlorofluorocarbon(CFC). CFCs are non-toxic and non-flammable and can be easily converted from liquid to gas and vice versa, which are used in the industrial machineries, refrigerators, air conditioners and other electrical appliances as well as aerosol-spray propellants, solvents, and foam-blowing agents. Their emission leads to the depletion of the Ozone layer, which is responsible for protecting the earth from the harmful Ultraviolet rays of the sun.

Their focus was on the simple yet important issues that are overlooked and generally termed as petty by people, such as water conservation, power saving, proper sewage and drainage systems, proper disposal of household wastes as well as industrial effluents, among others.

They not only talked about certain issues and concerns but also suggested some ways to overcome the problems, namely rain water harvesting, installation of water efficient shower heads, use of power saving appliances, as well as some minor yet prominent solutions like switching  off fans, ACs, lights when not using them; closing off taps while brushing or shaving, usage of cloth or jute bags instead of plastics and the construction of more public toilets.

The 15 minute play was precise yet demonstrative as well as informative. The play ended with a note from the director urging people to stop being careless and start being careful and considerate towards Mother Earth.
