‘71% Kolkata teens stay online at least 1 hour everyday’

More than 70 per cent of the teenagers in the city spend at least one hour everyday online, according to a survey report released today.

The TCS Youth Survey report said, “71 per cent of the respondents spend at least an hour everyday online. While 31 per cent of them respond to notifications once a day, 30 per cent respond within 5 minutes.” 

The survey aims to capture the digital habits of children between the age group 12-18 years.

However, when it comes to news, the survey finds traditional media as the king.

“Overall, TV and newspapers were the most used means of consuming news (75 per cent) followed by links from friends/ family on Facebook and online sources,” it said.

Face to face communication is still the most preferred way of communication with friends (36 per cent) as compared to phone calls and social media, the survey said.

The report said that 43 per cent of the respondents’ online activities are monitored by parents and a similar percentage of the respondents’ parents have access to their online accounts.

Smartphones were found to be the most coveted electronic gadget (82 per cent) among Kolkata teens.
