6 die, 30 hospitalised after consuming spurious liquor

Six persons were killed while thirty others are hospitalised after they consumed hooch at Ramgopalpur area under Galsi police station in Burdwan.

Police said that the deceased are all are aged between 26 and 35. The injured victims have been undergoing treatment at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. Some of the injured persons are stated to be in serious conditions.

Senior administrative officials met the deceased family members on Tuesday and talked with them.

Police said that Sanjay Rui Das, a local youth on Monday night went to a nearby hooch den and consumed some spurious liquor.

After returning home, he complained of severe pain on his abdomen. Few minutes later, Das started vomiting and his family members took him to Pursa block hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Five other victims complained of the same symptoms of abdomen pain followed by vomiting of blood. They were first taken to Pursa block hospital and they were later transferred to Burdwan Medical College 
and Hospital.

Both the victims later died in the hospital. The doctors suspect that the victims might have died after consuming spurious liquor.

Many of the victims are undergoing treatment at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. The health 
condition of some of the victims has improved and they were discharged from the hospital.

After the news spread, the local people and the family members of the deceased rushed to the liquor shop and staged demonstration demanding the shutdown of the illegal shop.

They alleged that people often gathered at the hooch den to consume spurious liquor. Police do not take action against them, alleged some local residents.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Police have started a probe in this regard. Those who run the shop are absconding since the incident had taken place. Police are conducting raid to nab the culprits.
