57-year-old woman private tutor murdered in Basirhat

A 57-year-old private tutor was murdered in her house where she used to live all alone at Basirhat in North 24-Parganas. The police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the murder, but suspect that she was killed by someone who wanted her property. Police said on Thursday morning, local people found thath the main door of the victim Manjula Mukhopadhyay’s house was broken. They went inside and found her body lying in a pool of blood in a room. They informed the police and the body was sent for an autopsy.

Later investigation revealed that on Wednesday night someone had entered the house and murdered her.  Volume of the television set inside her house was at a high pitch. Thus her cry for help didn’t reach her neighbours.

The accused had first strangulated her using a piece of cloth and then stabbed her to ensure her death. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused was well known to the woman and was also well aware about the locality. The accused also knew that she used to stay alone in the house.

Her relation with her husband had deteriorated following certain problems and since then she was staying all alone. In morning and evening students used to come to her house to take tuition. Police came to know after speaking to some of the local people and her relatives that she was owner of some property that also included the house where she was murdered. Based on the statement of the neighbours, police suspect that someone very close to the woman had murdered her.

Incidentally, the police have not found anything strewn on the floor of the room. At the same time the cupboard and other valuables in the house was also left untouched. “It suggests that the accused want to get possession over the entire property especially the house by killing her,” said a police officer.
