52 more arrested for consuming liquor in public

With 52 more violators, as many as 294 people have been arrested under the Delhi government Excise Department’s drive to check the consumption of liquor in open and public places.

The action is being taken under Section 40 of the Delhi Excise Act. The violators are being handed over to the Delhi Police for further action.

The Delhi government had announced a three-fold action plan to check the consumption of liquor and violation of the Excise Act. A week-long awareness drive was launched in this regard recently, after which arrests are being made.

While launching the drive against open drinking in public places on November 7, the Delhi government had said that it has decided to strictly enforce the Excise Act strictly, under which consuming alcohol at public places attracts a fine of Rs 5,000, which can even go up to Rs 10,000, with a jail term of three months if the offender creates nuisance

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has appreciated the efforts of the Excise Department and asked it to continue the drive, so that the menace which is taking a toll on families and safety of women can be curbed. He has made it clear that the government’s intention is not to put people in jails but to reform them and curb this menace.
