50 passports recovered from a residence in Beckbagan

The city police on Sunday afternoon recovered around 50 passports from the residence of a youth, who fled after beating up two aged members of a local club and a boy at Beckbagan area here.

Police said the accused Sahid alias Sonu was a resident of Ahiripukur Second Lane. He was a “drug addict”. 

On Saturday night he was in an inebriated state and had abused some members of a local club. During the scuffle, he thrashed two aged members of YMS Club.

Hearing the scuffle, local people reached the spot and manhandle Sonu. After getting information, a police team from Karaya police station reached the spot and took Sonu to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital for treatment. A local resident SK Akhtar Hossain had lodged a complaint against Sonu.

Police said Sonu jumped off from the Male Ward of the hospital and fled on Saturday night. His family members were also present at the hospital when he escaped.

Sonu returned on Sunday afternoon and he injured a local boy Mahin Khan with a razor and fled the scene. The boy is under treatment at a private hospital in Ekbalpore. The police also recorded statement of the victim.

The local residents staged a demonstration protesting against the failure of the police to arrest the accused. Later a police team reached Sonu’s residence from where they recovered around 50 passports.

Preliminary investigation revealed that all the passports are original and probe is on to find that why the passports were kept in the house of the accused. A huge contingent of police was posted to maintain law and order in the area. A senior police officer said they were conducting search operation to arrest Sonu.
