‘5 fast-track courts to deal with rape cases’

Delhi government has offered to set up five fast-track courts to deal with rape cases. Chief minister Sheila Dikshit told Millennium Post she has written to the Chief Justice of Delhi HC that the infrastructure for five fast-track courts were ready. ‘I specially rang up Chief Justice  Darmar Murugesan and requested him to take urgent action to make five special fast track courts functional, as approved by the city government. We will suggest bail should not be granted in such cases,’ she said.

In order to provide security to women in the city, to deal with the cases of sexual assault on women and to provide speedy justice and conviction of the guilty, Delhi government had approved setting up of such courts. Sources said Delhi cabinet is expected to take up a proposal in this regard very soon as such courts have not been made functional despite a communication of approval setting up of the courts sent to the High Court in October, 2012. ‘Delhi government would be willing to extend any support in making the courts functional at the earliest. Along with this, awareness is also required in mass scale in this regard and campaign would be planned also to deal with this grave issue. As Delhi is also centrally located, people run away from our jurisdiction after committing crime,’ she said.

Dikshit called up Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar more than once in  the day to seek details about the probe and asked him to take immediate steps to arrest the perpetrators. She also wanted Kumar to take steps that would make women in the capital feel safer.

Meanwhile, the chief minister has also sought an appointment with the union home minister to seek his immediate intervention in ensuring a foolproof law and order situation in Delhi in order to overcome such incidents. Sources said that the chairman and members of Delhi Women’s Commission would also accompany Dikshit during her meeting with the home minister.
