5 die in cloudburst in Ghansali block of Tehri district

‘Three village women and two small girls were buried alive while they were sleeping. Search and rescue operations are on full swing, but poor road connectivity and inclement weather in Tehri district are proving to be hurdles for rescue teams to reach the spot in required strength. The state MeT department has predicted medium to heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours in the higher mountains of Uttarakhand.
At around 2 am when the entire village was sleeping, this cloudburst resulted in the destruction of 12 buildings, and three local families bore the maximum brunt. It is feared that the death toll may rise as the rescue team and operations along with local police are searching for missing persons under the rubble of damaged buildings and debris.
The disaster victims include women Magni Devi (52), Mangeleshwari Devi (36), Lachu Devi (56) and two teenagers — Ritika (13) and Bebu (10).
CM Harish Rawat has assured that search and rehabilitative operations will be carried out with full might.
