5 arrested for duping elderly

Five persons were arrested on Tuesday morning from Salt Lake on charges of duping many elderly people after assuring them help to get life insurance coverage. A police officer said all five of them – Bubai Guchait, Rahul Dusia, Bubai Halder, Rajesh Das and Pranjal Raba – had been operating a racket to cheat aged people in Salt Lake. After collecting all information about aged people in the area, they used approach them posing as agents of different life insurance companies. The elderly people face various troubles to invest in life insurance schemes due to their old age. Thus they easily fall prey to the proposals of investment given by the accused. The accused used to keep watch on the elderly people and used to target the people who stayed all alone in their house with sons and other members of the family staying abroad or other parts of the country. Investigation revealed that the racket had been operating in the area for the past few years and they had collected a huge amount of money from a large number of people.

They had provided fake money collection receipt of a life insurance company to many of the investors. None of the investors had suspected that all five of them were cheating them because of their friendly attitude and the fake certificates and receipts that they had provided. One of the investors suspected them when they delayed in returning the amount that he had given them for a life insurance scheme. He had asked them return the money as he had later decided not to go for the investment.

A complaint was lodged with the Electronics Complex police station alleging that his money was not being returned though he needed it urgently. He had alleged that the accused had failed to return the money despite giving several assurances. Police initiated a probe based on the complaint.
