49 arrested for ransacking police station at Dolhat

Around 49 persons have been arrested for ransacking the police station and beating up police personnel when a meeting was scheduled to take place between the two sides at Dholhat in South 24-Parganas on Sunday.

With the situation going beyond control, section 144 was imposed in the area. Police prickets have been set up at various points and the Rapid Action Forces were marching down the lanes. The violence was triggered when a clash broke out between local people and the police force at Dholhat.

The incident turned into a complete mayhem after the local residents gathered there demanding action in connection with the murder of a businessman in the area few days ago. The local people organised a gherao movement at the police station alleging that police did not take any action against the accused.

A meeting between the local people and the police officers was scheduled on Sunday but the mob turned violent when the police officers failed to turn up. This led to a brawl between the two sides resulting in injury to both local residents and police personnel.

Injured police persons were rushed to a hospital in Diamond Harbour where they were currently undergoing treatment. The mob also set fire on a police vehicle. Police claimed that the attackers previously plotted the incident and there were many anti-social elements involved in the attack.
Soon after the incident the police had cordoned off the entire area.

The local people have, however, alleged that one person was injured in the police firing that had taken place on Saturday. The local residents alleged that the police attacked them when they went to the police station with a demand of proper probe into the death of a local businessman.

The district administration, however, denied the incident and said that the police had fired in the air to bring the situation under control. Police have started a detailed probe into the incident and are conducting raids to nab the other culprits involved in the incident.

As per the preliminary investigation, police suspect that some local anti-socials fuelled the incident and attacked the police. They also hurled bomb at the police.
