47-yr-old homemaker suffers acid attack in west Delhi

Days after the Supreme Court hit out at the Centre for not being serious about preventing acid attacks and set a 16 July deadline for a framework to be put in place to regulate over-the-counter sales of acids often used in such attacks, a 47-year-old woman (name withheld) suffered an acid attack in west Delhi on Sunday. The accused is still absconding.

The incident took place in the Punjabi Bagh area in west Delhi. 'The victim was immediately taken to  the nearby Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for treatment. The victim, who had suffered superficial burns, was discharged from the hospital the same night,' a police official investigating the case said. According to the official, 'The incident was reported to police at approximately 8 pm on Sunday by the hospital authorities.' A team of officials immediately reached the hospital to investigate the case, he added. The identity of the victim was not disclosed, but it has been revealed that she is a middle-class homemaker and a resident of Najafgarh.

A case under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station.
