45-year-old man dies in accident at Howrah

Some local people set a vehicle of police on fire and put up a road block on National Highway 6 following a road accident in which a 45-year old man was killed after being hit by a truck at Kulgachia Crossing at Uluberia in Howrah.

Police said the victim Sk Samsud was killed after being hit by a truck when he was heading home on his bicycle. The driver of the truck failed to control the speed of the vehicle suddenly finding the victim crossing the national highway on his bicycle and hit him.

The driver, however, managed to flee with the truck. Local people rescued the Samsud and took him to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The residents of the area put up a road block when they came to know that Samsud was declared brought dead protesting against frequent accidents in the area.

A clash broke out between the local residents and the police when they latter went to disperse the mob to clear the highway. The mob pelted stones and set the car of the inspector-in-charge (IC) of Uluberia police station on fire. The local people even chased the police and beat up the IC Ranjit Ghosh. RAF was deployed and the police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob.

It continued for around one and a half hour. The incident led to massive traffic congestion in the area. Senior police officers also went to the spot to normalise the traffic situation.

It may also be mentioned that a youth was hit by a vehicle at the spot on Monday injuring him.

The local residents had blocked the road following the incident and had manhandled an assistant sub-inspector when he had intervened to bring the situation under control.

A senior police officer said that necessary steps will be taken to check the incidents of accidents in the area and additional policemen will be deployed to maintain the traffic at that spot.
