411 killed while crossing rail tracks

Over 400 people in Delhi have died this year till September crossing rail tracks, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.

While 411 people have died till September, 401 people died last year crossing railway tracks and 545 were killed in 2010, Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said in a written reply.

Replying to a question, he said regular drives are being conducted against trespassers under provisions of the Railways Act and close coordination is being maintained with civil police, government railway police and civil administration to assist railways to prevent trespass on railway tracks.

However, he said there are no plan for construction of boundary wall on long stretches along the tracks in Delhi area specifically to prevent trespassing.

On preventing encroachment along rail tracks, he said 13.96 km of boundary wall has been constructed on the Delhi-Palwal section at a cost of about Rs 3.5 crore.
