‘40 cases of crimes against women filed daily by Delhi Police’

Despite making all the right noises about the issue, the Delhi administration seems to have completely failed in ensuring security for its women. The dubious distinction of being an unsafe place for women refuses to leave the national capital. Unfortunately, the situation only seems to be worsening.

The latest report released by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs says that on an average 40 cases of crimes against women are registered on a daily basis by the city police. This includes at least four cases of rape.

While a total of 13,230 cases of crimes against women have been registered as of November 15 this year, 11,479 cases were reported in the corresponding period of 2013. This is an increase of 15.25 per cent.

The MHA, however, attributes the spike in the rate of crimes committed against women in Delhi to the fact that the registration of rape, molestation and other crimes against women have risen as an outcome of increased awareness of general public and the special measures taken by the government.

The government claims that women are now feeling encouraged to come forward and lodge complaints. The situation remains grim for women living in the NCR despite various efforts made by the Delhi Police to change the situation on the ground, including increased patrolling and monitoring of registration of complaints.
