4 suspended for stabbing 2nd yr student during clash

Four students of a private engineering college at Liluah in Howrah were suspended on Tuesday in connection with the incident in which a second year student was stabbed following a dispute between  two groups of students. Two of the suspended students are of second year and one each of third and fourth year respectively.

College administration has formed a committee to probe into the entire incident and stringent steps will be taken against the students if the investigation reveals that they were guilty.

The college remained closed on Tuesday following the incident on Monday. It is learnt that the victim Subham Sekhar, who is originally a resident of Pune, was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday morning. The doctors have kept him under observation. His parents were on way to the city and they will be reaching by Wednesday. Sources said that the victim told the police that he was caught in the brick battle between two rival groups of students when he was going to have tea on Monday evening. One of the groups thought him to be a close associate of their rival group and started beating him. They continued beating him up and one of them stabbed him on his back.

Most of the students fled finding him bleeding profusely. But there were some who had informed the college authorities as the incident had taken place outside the premises of the educational institution and he was taken to the private hospital. The victim claimed that he was not involved in the dispute and went to the place without knowing that the rival groups had engaged into the fight. Sources said that there used to be difference in opinions between the students who were residents of the hostel and those who stayed by sharing rented flats in the vicinity of the college. It could be the reason behind the clash. But it can only be confirmed after the probe is complete.
