4 killed in truck-mini-truck collision on Durgapur E-way

Four persons were killed in a road accident at Majinan near Gurap in Hooghly in which a truck collided head on with a mini-truck on Durgapur Expressway on Sunday morning.

Police said that the victims are yet to be identified.

Nilmadhab Das, a local resident who witnessed the incident, said the truck was heading towards Burdwan when a mini-truck entered in its flank violating traffic norms.

Finding the mini-truck suddenly approaching in front, the driver of the truck failed to control his vehicle and they collided head on. The mini-truck turned turtle after the collision.

Local people initiated the rescue work and informed the police. Policemen from the nearest police station rushed to the spot.

Local people had managed to bring the driver and the helper of the truck outside the ill fated vehicle. But it was not possible to extricate the bodies of the driver and truck of the mini-truck. Electric cutters were used to cut open a portion of the vehicle to bring both of them out.

Police had taken all four of them to Chinsurah Hospital where they were declared brought dead.

A police officer said that the mini-truck was not supposed to enter the flank which was meant for the North bound traffic. It seems that the mini-truck had to enter a factory in the vicinity and it entered the flank using a cut instead of following the traffic guidelines. “We got the details of the owners of the vehicles using the registration numbers and we have contacted them. They can give us details of the victims,” the officer said.

The incident led to massive traffic congestion in the area. Long queues of vehicles were found on the Expressway. Some local people has also agitated demanding posting of a policeman to maintain the movement of vehicles near the cut.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot and took necessary steps to clear the traffic congestion.
