35-yr-old shopkeeper rapes minor, arrested

A 9-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 35-year-old man in Burari area of North Delhi. The incident took place on Saturday evening when the minor was playing near her house with her friends.

‘The accused lured her and took her to his shop and raped her. After the incident my baby was crying and
was in shock. She was also afraid as the accused had warned her not to tell it to anyone but after I insisted, she narrated her ordeal to me,’ the minor’s mother said.

The accused has been identified as Harish, who runs a general store in the area. According to police, the incident came to light on Saturday evening when the victim’s parents approached the police station and informed them that their daughter was raped by a neighbour.

‘We have filed a case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal code and several other sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) at Burari police station of North Delhi,’ said the police inspector investigating the case.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital after the incident was reported for a medical
examination. The examination confirmed rape. ‘The accused was arrested from his residence and he admitted that he lured the victim when she was playing outside her home,’ the officer added.

Angered over the alleged delay in filing of the case, people of the area protested outside the police station saying the police delayed registering the FIR.

‘When we enquired about the delay in registering the complaint,  police officers said the subdivision had only one lady constable for four police stations and that they were waiting for her, a neighbor of the victim said.
