30% of Guj bus conductors will be women

With the Gujarat government deciding to reserve 30 per cent government posts for women across all sectors, in order to empower them, even roadways buses in the western state will have as many women conductors, to be appointed in a phased manner.

In a first-of-its-kind move, Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC), which created 284 posts for women conductors recently, will present appointment letters to 181 selected women at a function in the state capital on 23 April, said GSRTC secretary P D Patel.

What is more, unlike their male counterparts, these women conductors will be posted near their native places to enable them to discharge duties at work and home smoothly.

However, they would have to work as many hours as their male counterparts.

Following the advertisement for 284 posts, the corporation had received nearly 1,350 applications from women candidates, of whom 181 were short-listed after tests. After receiving their appointment letters, they will undergo a three-day training in Gandhinagar. Thereafter, they would be posted around their native places.

The Corporation, popularly known as ‘ST’ across Gujarat, as an acronym for State Transport, will soon advertise for the remaining vacancies of 103 posts for women conductors, Patel said.
