3 shot at by miscreants for protesting against gambling racket

Three persons were attacked by some local miscreants after they protested against an illegal gambling racket operating from the area. The incident had triggered tension among the local residents at Saratpally area of Kachrapara in North 24 Parganas.

The local residents said that the miscreants who run the gambling racket had shot at the victims but they escaped bullet injuries. The miscreants also allegedly set the house of one of the victims on fire for voicing his protest against the gambling den.

An irate mob eventually ransacked the gambling den where the accused used to run the racket from. The local people said that one Santosh Kurmi and some of his associates have been operating the gambling racket in the locality. As the victims had raised a protest against them for running a gambling den in the area, they hatched a plan to teach them a lesson and made some plan accordingly.

The local residents alleged that the accused has been running the racket for quite sometimes but no one dared to raise a protest against him as he is involved in anti-social activities in the area. Few months ago, the local residents gathered up courage and lodged a complaint against the accused. But it has been alleged that the police did not take any steps against the accused.

On Monday night, a scuffle broke out between the accused and the three victims. The accused fled the spot. He, however, brought some other miscreants from the nearby locality and attacked the three victims, identified as Tapan Banik, Yadav Das, Laltu Dey. All of them had received injuries in the incident and they were rushed to the Kalyani JNM Hospital for treatment.

The local people alleged that the miscreants also fired at the victims but they escaped any bullet injuries. Following the incident, the local residents lodged a complaint.
