3 killed, 4 injured in separate road accidents

Three persons including a woman were killed and four others were injured in two separate road accidents in Bankura and Raiganj in the past 24 hours.

Police said Mistimoni Orao and his son Monojit Tirkey were killed when a pick-up van in which they were travelling collided head on with another vehicle from the opposite direction on National Highway 34 at Nagar area in Raiganj.

The incident took place on Thursday night when the victims were returning from a relative’s house. The driver of the victim’s van seemed to be in an inebriated state and he failed to control the vehicle when the vehicle from opposite direction approached at a high speed and the vehicles collided. Drivers of both the vehicles, however, got saved miraculously. Local people took Orao and Tirkey to hospital where they were declared brought dead. In another road accident at Raipur in Bankura, a 30-year-old man Amiya Kundu was killed and four others were injured when a truck loaded with sacks containing wheat overturned on them after hitting a roadside tree on Friday night. The victims were sitting outside a tea stall in the area. Suddenly they heard a thud sound and within a few seconds the truck fell on them. Gouranga Majumder, a local resident who witnessed the incident, said it seems that one tyre of the truck had bust and the driver failed to control the speeding vehicle. It hit a tree and then turned turtle. Five persons got trapped under the truck. Policemen reached the spot and with the help of local people extricated all five of them. Kundu was declared brought dead while four others were admitted with severe injuries when taken to Sammelani Medical College and Hospital. All four are fighting for their lives in the hospital. The driver of the truck had managed to flee after the accident.
