3 Kashyap films shortlisted for Cannes

Anurag Kashyap is over the moon with this news – and why would he not be? Two of his movies – Peddlers and Gangs Of Wassaypur – I and II have been shortlisted for the Cannes Film Festival.


Kashay tweeted - 'Three of our films; Peddlers, Gangs Of Wasseypur (I&II) at Cannes Film Festival. HUGE MOMENT OF PRIDE FOR US!' and 'Waiting at theBrussels airport in a silent zone, wanting to scream out loud, off to Copenhagen.. I am very happy..really Happy today.'


The Director's Fortnight list which will feature Kashayp's works also includes works by - Merzak Allouache's El Taaib, Rodney Ascher's Room 237, Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner's Ernest et Célestine, Benjamin Ávila's Infancia clandestina, Massoud Bakhshi's Yek Khanévadéh-e Mohtaram (A Respectable Family), Rachid Djaïdani's Rengaine (Hold Back), Michel Gondry's The We and the I, Hur Jin-Ho's Dangerous Liaisons, Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur, Pablo Larraín's No, Noémie Lvovsky's Camille redouble, Yulene Olaizola's Fogo, Bruno Podalydès's Adieu Berthe, l'enterrement de mémé and Jaime Rosales's Sueño y silencio.


Gangs of Wasseypur is about the coal mafia in Dhanbad (Jharkhand)and has turned out to be a two-part marathon, each two hours and 40 minutes in length. The movie is said to be inspired from the story of Jharkhand politician Suryadev Singh,Binod Singh,Sakeldeo Singh and Birendra Pratap Singh, who was convicted of murder.


Gangs of Wasseypur will feature an ensemble caste consisting of actors like Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqu,i Jaideep Ahlawat, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Aditya Kumar, Reemma Sen, Richa Chadda, Huma Qureshi, and Piyush Mishra.


According to another tweet by Kashyap today – Gangs of Wasseypur was apparently one movie that was almost 'not made'. Destiny clearly had different plans for the director and the movie. And while we wait for the movie to hit screens – the cast and crew can celebrate.
