3 held for thrashing Air Force personnel

A day after a 21-year-old Air Force personnel from Darjeeling was brutally thrashed in a South Delhi saloon after a minor tiff, police have arrested three youth in connection with the attack.

Sunny, Gaurav and Jagran, all aged around 20, were nabbed from Vasant Gaon area hours after the incident. They have been booked under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the IPC, said DCP (South) Prem Nath.

The victim, Lobsang Sherpa, belongs to Darjeeling. He is a sepoy (air soldier) posted at the Air Force base in West Bengal and presently attached to the Air Force Station in New Delhi’s Race Course. He was living at a rented accommodation in Vasant Gaon for the past one month. The incident took place on Thursday evening when Sherpa went to a local saloon for a haircut. He had his earphones plugged in and a local approached him and asked to stop the music.

“When I asked him why, he used an offensive word. And then when I told him not to use such words, he turned aggressive leading to an altercation,” the Air Force personnel said.

Sherpa further said: “In a few minutes, around 10 people gathered outside the saloon. I knew some of them by their faces, who have often passed racial remarks. The barber suggested an alternate exit to avoid the group, but they held me by then and started thrashing me.”

By the time a crowd gathered, the attackers fled the scene. Locals called up the police and Sherpa was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Center. He got severe injuries on his head, neck and back. “It was an unprovoked attack by persons who bear a grudge, which can’t be backed by any logic, against people like us who are not from the ‘mainland’,” Sherpa claimed.

Sherpa, who had to be given 10 stitches on his head, was discharged after his condition got stable. A case was registered soon after at Vasant Vihar police station and the police started with questioning the locals to identify the accused.
