3 cops suspended for extorting `18L from person who was robbed

Delhi Police on Tuesday dismissed three personnel from the Special Cell for allegedly extorting over Rs 18 lakh from a commission agent whose diamond jewellery worth Rs 2 crore was recently stolen in East Delhi’s Preet Vihar area on August 31.

Sources said that Special Cell inspector Rahul Sahni, sub-inspector Nirbhay Rana and constable Ravinder were dismissed on Tuesday after it was found that they had taken money from the commission agent, Vijay Gupta. Police said that on August 31, Gupta was heading home in car with the diamond jewellery worth Rs 2 crore. En-route his home in Patparganj, two unidentified men allegedly punctured a tyre of his car at Karkari Mod red light, broke the window and stole the bag full of the jewellery.

Sources said that the cops from the Special Cell allegedly extorted Rs 18 lakh from Gupta claiming that the theft case has been solved and the diamond jewellery have been recovered by them. On Sunday, the East district police held two persons including a juvenile in connection with the theft and recovered the stolen jewellery. Accused Vinay was arrested from Madangir area in South Delhi by a team of officials of Preet Vihar police station.

Police said that a team of Special Cell including the dismissed cops had reportedly helped East district police in solving the case and recovery of the jewellery. Initially, Gupta didn’t make any allegation against the dismissed Special Cell cops for extorting money from him. However, in an inquiry conducted by the Special Cell, the three cops were found guilty of extorting money to the tune of Rs 18 lakh.
